Mumbai Indians are struggling in IPL 2026 with the results going against them. Five time champions have only won two out of their seven matches and lost five placing them at the eighth position of the points table.

Loss to CSK at Wankhede has put extra pressure on them and with the league progressing fast MI now needs a winning spree to be part of the playoff race.

Captaincy rumours about Hardik Pandya

Ever since rumors about the possible change in captaincy have been swirling around social media. Many have questioned Hardik Pandya’s leadership and say that the management could look for alternatives. Hardik was named captain of the MI squad on December 15, 2023 and has not won the trophy since although few performances have been good.

The question mark on captaincy has risen as Hardik Pandya’s records as captain have been fantastic, having led Gujarat Titans to the title in 2022 and final in 2023 but some also argue that the coach of Gujarat Ashish Nehra was responsible behind his success and the debates over Hardik's captaincy at MI just add fuel to the fire.

The team traveled to Jamnagar right after the loss which was very unusual and created even more stir among fans about the change in team setup and captain.

Team denies rumors, wants a comeback

However, latest reports clarify all the confusion. Sport journalist Nitin K Srivastava said that the rumors about the captaincy change were not true and everything is normal within the team.

"Good news for MI and Rohit Sharma fans Rohit looks very likely to be available vs SRH on the 29th. He's been training smoothly, no pain or discomfort during rehab Also, the captaincy chatter on social media? Nothing but Pure rumours for now all okay in the TEAM. #MI"

According to him, traveling to Jamnagar has nothing to do with the team's decision but they are here to take rest as they will get to play after 5 days and wanted to make most of their break. Meanwhile, Hardik's form with bat and bowl too has been an issue where he has scored 97 runs in six innings and picked three wickets at a high economy rate, he also missed a game due to fever. However, MI still is in race of playoffs if they win remaining games. MI will next play SRH on 29th April.
