New Delhi: There was an earthquake in Delhi politics on Friday which hardly anyone had imagined. 7 out of 10 Rajya Sabha MPs of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) announced to leave the party together. These include big names like Raghav Chaddha and Sandeep Pathak. This entire incident has not only raised question marks on the future of AAP, but has also sparked a new debate in the country’s politics.
The country’s veteran lawyer and Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal has taken a strong dig at this political drama. Sibal said that it is a very interesting news that 7 MPs of AAP are moving towards BJP. Attacking him, he said, “I think neither the BJP nor these seven MPs have much understanding of the Constitution. They probably don’t even know the true legal meaning of ‘merge’.” Sibal further alleged that the ruling party just knows how to buy and bribe people.
Friday proved to be a nightmare for the Aam Aadmi Party. Seven MPs, including senior party leaders Raghav Chadha and Sandeep Pathak, announced their decision to leave the party. The list of those who left the party is long – Raghav Chadha, Sandeep Pathak, Vikramjit Singh Sahni, Ashok Mittal, Harbhajan Singh, Rajinder Gupta and Swati Maliwal. According to the report, four of these MPs, including Raghav and Sandeep Pathak, have joined BJP, while the rest are also waiting.
The impact of this breakdown is going to be very deep. AAP had a total of 10 MPs in the Rajya Sabha, giving the party a strong voice in the upper house. Now after the departure of 7 MPs, the party is left with only 3 MPs. This simply means that now the influence of ‘AAP’ will be negligible during the discussion on any law or bill in the Rajya Sabha. Even at the national level, this is being considered a big blow for Arvind Kejriwal’s party.
There is discussion in political circles whether this is just a coincidence or a well-thought-out strategy? The departure of 7 out of 10 MPs, i.e. more than two-thirds of the number, may be an attempt to avoid the anti-defection law. However, legal experts like Sibal believe that the matter is not so simple. Now it remains to be seen whether AAP will be able to recover from this big wound or whether this party which is in power in Delhi will be reduced to the national stage.
