Carlos Brathwaite has proposed that 15-year-old Indian cricket sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi should receive mentorship akin to that of West Indies cricket icon Brian Lara during his formative years, prior to making his international debut.
In a recent Indian Premier League (IPL) match against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), Sooryavanshi showcased his extraordinary talent by scoring 103 runs off just 37 balls, which included five fours and an impressive twelve sixes, achieving a strike rate of 278.38. This remarkable performance made him the youngest and fastest player to reach 1,000 runs in T20 cricket. Despite Rajasthan Royals (RR) losing the match, Sooryavanshi's innings highlighted his immense potential.
Following the match, Brathwaite discussed on ESPNcricinfo's TimeOut show that Sooryavanshi should adopt a developmental strategy similar to that of Lara. He noted that Lara was recognized early as a unique talent and trained alongside seasoned players like Vivian Richards before debuting internationally at the age of 21. Brathwaite emphasized that India should keep Sooryavanshi close to the senior team to learn and grow, rather than rushing him into international play.
"I apologize, Vaibhav, but if you look at how West Indies handled Brian Lara... he was a generational talent, everyone knew. So what did the West Indies do? They put him in the mix with Viv Richards and whatnot, but he didn't play [international cricket]. That was a different time with loads of tour games, and he cut his teeth with the senior players without having made his debut. And then we know how his career went once he debuted," Brathwaite remarked.
Brathwaite advocated for a balanced approach for Sooryavanshi, suggesting he should be integrated into the Indian team environment to learn from experienced players like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Suryakumar Yadav, as well as peers closer to his age. He stated, "So maybe there is the best of both worlds - where you can have him with the Indian team - learn from Virat [Kohli], learn from Rohit [Sharma], learn from Suryakumar Yadav. There are younger players that are close to him in age that he can learn from, before just throwing him in the deep end."
Deep Dasgupta, a former Indian cricketer and commentator, expressed concerns regarding Sooryavanshi's mental readiness for the pressures of top-level cricket. He highlighted that while Sooryavanshi possesses the technical skills necessary for success, his mental preparedness remains uncertain. Dasgupta cautioned that young talents can easily lose their way and emphasized the importance of ensuring Sooryavanshi is mentally equipped before introducing him to the Indian team.
"We've seen some really good talents go a little bit awry. People talk about 'he should be in the Indian side' and fair enough. But there are two sides to this story and two major things you need: technical acumen and mental acumen. Technically, he's there - we've seen how he has played against the top bowlers of the world. So we know he can handle the technical side of it. But the mental side of it - he will have his ups and downs. Now, whether he is ready mentally to handle it or not... we have to be a little careful on how to handle it," Dasgupta stated.
Currently, Sooryavanshi ranks as the third-highest run-scorer in the IPL 2026 season, accumulating 357 runs in eight innings at a strike rate of 234.87.
