New Delhi: Chelsea’s emabattled campaign received a boost as they entered the FA Cup final with a 1-0 win over Leeds United on Sunday.


Argentine midfielder Enzo Fernandez scored in the 23rd minute to put them in the showpiece match next month where they will face Manchester City.


Fernandez placed himself between defenders to head home a cross from Pedro Neto and score the match-winning goal.


Chelsea sacked manager Liam Rosenior on Wednesday after slumping to five successive defeats in the English Premier League in whatb as been a difficult decision for them.


The eight-time champions were in control in the first half though needed keeper Robert Sanchez to make crucial saves in both halves to keep a clean sheet.


Chelsea’s interim coach Calum McFarlane was in charge on Sunday will lead them in the final on May 16.


“It’s amazing. The boys reacted in the way they should have. We’ve tried to keep everyone positive in training and it’s the chance to be in another final,” Sanchez told TNT Sports.


Man City defeated Southampton 2-1 on Saturday to reach the final scheduled to be held on May 16.


It would be Chelsea’s 10th final appearance in the tournament since 2007. Man City have already won the League Cup this season.

‘Fernadez a winner’

“It was important to break the momentum and the form we were in. We were confident we would do that today and I think this completely changes the feel within the group,” McFarlane said.


“He’s a winner — he’s got so much talent, so much fight, he’s massive for this group,” he said of Fernandez.


“You could feel the boys were a bit too nervous today to be at their free-flowing best,” said Leeds manager Daniel Farke said.


“They always had an answer to all our questions that we asked,” he added about Chelsea. “It’s hard to take anyhow, but nevertheless I’m proud of the cup run.”
