Recent developments in India’s leading political party, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), have created a serious political crisis. After the resignation of seven Rajya Sabha MPs of the party and joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the leadership is now preparing to take strict steps.

New Delhi: After the news of seven Rajya Sabha MPs of Aam Aadmi Party joining Bharatiya Janata Party, a big political crisis has arisen within the party. This development has forced the party leadership to take a tough stand, and now AAP is preparing to take all possible constitutional and legal steps to get the membership of these MPs cancelled.

In this sequence, Bhagwant Singh Mann, who is the Chief Minister of Punjab, has sought time to meet the President. According to the information, Bhagwant Mann will meet the President along with the state MLAs to formally raise the issue and demand action against the MPs.

What is the whole matter?

On April 24, seven AAP Rajya Sabha MPs—including prominent names like Raghav Chadha, Sandeep Pathak and Ashok Mittal—resigned from the party and joined the BJP. This development is being considered a big blow for the party, as it has weakened AAP’s strength in the Upper House of Parliament. Political analysts believe that this is not just a matter of resignations, but a sign of growing dissatisfaction and leadership crisis within the party. Most of the MPs belonging to Punjab leaving the party together also raises questions on AAP’s regional hold.

Preparation to meet the President

Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has indicated that he will present his views before the President along with the MLAs of Punjab. Their aim is to terminate the membership of these MPs on the basis of “Right to Recall”. AAP argues that the sudden departure of MPs who were elected on the party ticket to the opposition party is a betrayal of the mandate.

However, constitutional experts are raising questions on this move. According to former Rajya Sabha Secretary General Yogendra Narayan, the current Constitution of India does not give MLAs or political parties the right to directly “recall” Rajya Sabha MPs. In such cases, the final decision is possible only by the Chairman or through legal process.

Political accusations intensify

AAP leaders have alleged political pressure and tactics like “Operation Lotus” behind this entire incident. The party says that due to fear and pressure from central agencies, the MPs decided to change parties. On the other hand, BJP claims that these leaders have joined the party voluntarily and it is a result of AAP’s internal weaknesses. This development has sparked a new debate in national politics—is it political opportunism or a change in ideology?

With the departure of seven AAP MPs from the Rajya Sabha, there has been a huge decline in the party’s numbers, which may affect its legislative effectiveness. In the times to come, this impact may also be visible on the party’s strategy within the Parliament and its role in the law making process.
