In a major infrastructure push, the Maharashtra government has approved the expansion of Mumbai Metro Line 5 along with a new extension—Metro Line 5A. The project, worth over ₹18,130 croreis set to transform connectivity across the rapidly growing Thane–Bhiwandi–Kalyan–Ulhasnagar belt.
Metro Line 5A is essentially an extension of the existing Metro Line 5 corridordesigned to bridge connectivity gaps after route changes in the original plan.
Originally, Metro Line 5 was supposed to extend fully to Kalyan. However, due to planning changes, it now ends at Durgadi—making Line 5A critical to completing the corridor.
Together, Metro Line 5 + 5A will form a ~34 km long integrated metro network with 19 stationssignificantly improving urban mobility in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).
This region is one of the fastest-growing suburban clusters, with heavy daily commuter traffic.
