Water alone is not enough to fight the scorching heat these days. So much sweat is released within minutes, which not only causes water loss in the body but also disturbs the balance of electrolytes. In such a situation, instead of water, doctors recommend drinking things that contain more electrolytes than water. Let us know what are electrolytes and what to drink to balance electrolytes?

What are electrolytes?

Electrolytes are minerals found in the body that have an electric charge. Both water and electrolytes are essential for the proper functioning of our body’s organs, muscles and cells. Their main function is to maintain the balance of fluids in the body.

names of electrolytes

  • Sodium

  • Potassium

  • Calcium

  • Magnesium

  • Chloride

  • Phosphate

  • Bicarbonate

function of electrolytes

  • Transmitting signals from the heart, muscles, and nerves to the rest of the body.

  • Creating new tissues i.e. creating new tissues.

  • Helping in blood clotting.

  • Controlling heart beat.

  • Balancing the pH level of blood.

What is Electrolyte Imbalance?

There should be a certain amount of electrolytes in the body. If this quantity becomes too high or too low, it is called ‘electrolyte imbalance’. These could be the main reasons for this.

dehydration- This happens in extremely hot weather, in case of any specific disease, due to irritation or excessive sweating. Due to which fluid gets removed from the body rapidly.

Kidney problem- People with kidney disease may have increased potassium levels in their body, which can be dangerous.

Other diseases- Apart from this, type 1 diabetes, eating disorders like bulimia or aging also cause electrolyte imbalance in the body.

Medicines- Some medications such as laxatives, chemotherapy medications, and blood pressure medications can also cause imbalances.

Symptoms of electrolyte imbalance in the body

  • Muscle cramps, weakness or strain.

  • Irregular or rapid heartbeat.

  • Headache and excessive thirst.

  • Feeling tired, confused, or lethargic.

  • Changes in blood pressure.

  • Seizures in severe cases.

How to maintain balance?

Eat healthy food- Eat fruits and vegetables that naturally contain electrolytes.

drink water- Drink enough water, but not too much, as too much water can flush electrolytes out of the body.

Less use of salt- Sodium is important, but too much salt can upset the balance.

Avoid heat- Avoid doing heavy exercise in very strong sunlight or heat.

After workout- After heavy exercise, compensate for the lack of fluids in the body with water or sports drinks.

If there is much problem then ask the doctor about it and only then consume something.
