Sri Lanka has roared back onto the global stage, its visitor numbers surging 50% year-over-year since 2023, fueled by Galle Fort’s charming allure, world-class surf breaks, and a tourism pivot toward authentic, adventure-laced escapes. Yet in South Asia’s hospitality scene, dominated by rigid five-stars and templated resorts, there’s a glaring void: no experiential hotel collective unbound by set rules or procedures, where stays feel alive not dictated by the brochure.
Enter Otherland Hotels, the Bengaluru-born disruptor filling that gap with its June 2026 debut: Otherland Galle, a 66-key oceanfront outpost on Sri Lanka’s southern coast. Founded in 2023 by Rishi Sreedharan and Samarth Gowda, ex-co-living pioneers, it’s the brand’s boldest statement yet, redefining lifestyle hotels at the nexus of surf culture, evolving tourism, and creative undercurrents near Galle Fort.
“South Asia is loud, alive, dripping with culture and taste, and deserves a hospitality brand that speaks its language without a costume,” says Sreedharan, founder & CEO. Co-founder Emanuel Sidhartha lends Sri Lankan cultural depth, while COO Gowda notes: “Galle felt like the truest Otherland, layered, alive, and its own. Independent hotels don’t just reflect destinations; they amplify them.”
Anchored in four pillars, fluid experiences, rooms as the focal point, intentional hospitality, and differentiated food and the property ditches dogma for subculture-driven pulse. Studio Camarada’s architecture opens to the coast: a double-height bar blends check-ins with café-bar-gelateria vibes; surf-patterned carpets lead to batik-swirled rooms in sandy-ocean-rust tones.
Food, drinks and music ignite the nights. Creatures – the rooftop multidimensional space shifts from terracotta-dayglow dining to crimson nightclub frenzy with cocktails, DJs, and live sound. The Bar-kery pulses as lobby heartbeat, vinyl, coffee, cocktails, diner fare till dawn. And a soon-to-be-launched third concept teases more.
“The OtherSide” programming makes the calendar the star: Surf Club with local riders for lessons and rituals; chef-mixology pop-ups featuring smoked heritage curries and forager spotlights. This is South Asia’s antidote to procedure-bound luxury, raw, rule-free, experiential.
With Otherland Galle, Otherland Hotels will launch a collective of hotels, restaurants, and beach clubs, building the region’s most rebellious lifestyle network, one embedded address at a time.
