Like many experienced actors, Simple Kaul is keen to explore unconventional and diverse roles . While she remains open to experimentation, she is equally mindful of not repeating similar characters.



She says, “I consciously choose roles that feel different when I hear the narration and seem fresh to me as an actor. I have a strong desire to take on deeper, more meaningful roles , but I also make sure I don’t repeat the same kind of characters. I enjoy playing strong roles, but I would get bored if I were constantly doing the same thing.”



Talking about how she identifies repetition, she explains that roles can start to feel predictable. She adds, “That’s when I take a step back and consciously say no, even if it’s a safe option. I look for scripts that offer a different perspective so I can break the cycle and keep things exciting for myself and the audience.”



Simple also believes that growth as an actor is closely tied to evolving life experiences. She says, “As we gain life experiences, our understanding of characters deepens.”



Explaining her process of building a character, she shares, “I sit with the director to understand the vision for the character, including her relationships, mindset, mannerisms, age group, triggers, background, and social and financial standing. All of this plays a vital role. I then approach the role based on my understanding of the brief, adding my own nuances and emotions.”



She adds that she is always drawn to roles that challenge her creatively. “I don’t focus on what the audience expects from me; I focus on how the role feels to me and how honestly I can portray it.”
