Ahmedabad, 30 April. Gujarat Titans (GT) bowlers shone on the good pitch of Narendra Modi Stadium here on Thursday night. The result was that the hosts won by four wickets with 25 balls to spare in a low-scoring match of the Tata Indian Premier League (IPL-19) and also settled the account of their defeat at the hands of defending champions Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in Bengaluru last Sunday (April 24).
All out for the first time in RCB season in front of Holder, Arshad and Rashid
Forced to bat first, RCB’s strong batting line-up comprising ‘Player of the Match’ Jason Holder (2-29), Arshad Khan (3-22) and Rashid Khan (2-19) was bundled out for just 155 runs in 19.2 overs. This was the first time in the current season, when Rajat Patidar’s team was all out.
Gujarat’s impressive win due to early pace from Gill and Butler
In reply, after the initial pace of captain Shubman Gill (43 runs, 18 balls, three sixes, four fours) and Jos Buttler (39 runs, 19 balls, four sixes, two fours), with the useful innings of other batsmen, Titans scored 158 runs for six wickets in 15.5 overs and also improved their net run rate with an impressive win.
Titans’ fifth win, RCB’s third defeat
This was Gujarat Titans’ fifth win in nine matches and they are in fifth place with 10 points. This was RCB’s third defeat in nine matches and with 12 points, it remains in second place after the top Punjab Kings (13 points in eight matches). Although Sunrisers Hyderabad and Rajasthan Royals also have 12 points each as RCB, but they are at third and fourth place respectively on the basis of weak net run rate.
Fast partnerships of Sai-Gill and Butler-Sundar
If we look at the batting of Titans, in front of a weak target, Gill made a fast start with Sai Sudarshan (six runs, one four) and added 42 runs in just 18 balls. During this, Gill gave away 24 runs including two sixes and three fours against Josh Hazlewood in the second over. But Bhuvneshwar Kumar (3-28) returned SAI on the last ball of the third over. Then in his next over the same bowler also prevented Gill from completing his fifty. But Butler along with Washington Sundar (12 runs, 12 balls, one six) scored 35 runs in 15 balls.
Tewatia along with Holder and Rashid secured the victory
Bhuvi also made Butler his third victim while Romario Shepherd (2-30) removed M. Shahrukh Khan (eight runs, one four) and Sundar in the 11th over. (5-111). At present, ‘impact player’ Rahul Tewatia (27 runs not out, 17 balls, four fours) did not show any nervousness and along with Holder (12 runs, 10 balls, one six) and Rashid Khan (seven runs not out, one four) ensured the team’s victory.
RCB batsmen defeated after the pace of Virat and Padikkal
Before this, Devdutt Padikkal (40 runs, 24 balls, two sixes, five fours) and Virat Kohli (28 runs, 13 balls, one six, five fours) showed initial pace in RCB’s innings. In this sequence, Virat broke 21 runs including five consecutive fours on Kagiso Rabada in the very second over. But the subsequent batsmen could not face the opposition bowlers strongly.
Highest partnership of 45 runs between Padikkal and Patidar
In the third over itself, While Siraj (1-38) dismissed opener Jacob Bethal (five runs, one four), Rabada (1-44) disappointed Virat in the next over. Padikkal made the biggest partnership of 45 runs with new batsman Rajat Patidar (19 runs, 15 balls, one six, two fours). But in the eighth over, when Arshad opened the gate by dismissing Patidar, the line started forming again.
Later, Romario Shepherd (17 runs, 15 balls, two sixes), Venkatesh Iyer (12 runs, 15 balls, one four) and Bhuvi (15 not out, 15 balls, two fours) could reach double figures. Apart from taking two wickets, Holder also took three catches and at the time of need, made a useful partnership of 30 runs in 20 balls with Tewatia, due to which he became eligible for ‘Player of the Match’.
