Watermelon is considered a major source of energy during the summer season. These fruits, full of water and natural sweetness, are very dear to the people. But can eating watermelon kill someone?

This question arises because recently a tragic incident has happened in Mumbai. Four members of the same family have died here. The family ate watermelon before they died. The police have also allegedly considered this case to be related to food poisoning.

According to NDTV report, while giving information about the incident, police officials said that the deceased family had eaten biryani with some relatives in the night itself. After this, when the relatives left, he ate the watermelon kept in the house. Within a few hours of eating it, everyone's health started deteriorating and they started complaining of vomiting and diarrhea. After this he reached the hospital, where all the family members died.

After this incident, the police also became alert and registered a case of death of the entire family. According to the police, it is too early to say anything in this matter. The food kept in the house has been sent for medical examination. Apart from this, post mortem reports are being awaited.

Can watermelon cause death?

This incident has put watermelon in the dock. The biggest question is whether eating watermelon can cause death. Talking to NDTV, Dr. Rupali Dutta said that watermelon can cause food poisoning. Sometimes it can also be serious. Along with this he also explained the reason for this. He said that watermelon has high amount of water and natural sugar, due to which if it gets contaminated, bacteria can grow rapidly. Apart from this, it has also come to light many times that glucose or sugar water is injected into watermelon to enhance its sweetness or appearance. If there is such a contaminated watermelon, the growth of bacteria may increase further.

According to doctors, the main symptoms of food poisoning related to watermelon are diarrhoea, vomiting and stomach upset. Its severity depends on the type of bacteria inside the watermelon, or the immunity of the person eating it.

However, doctors also stressed that it is not right to blame watermelon without any investigation. Food poisoning can also be caused by contaminated fruit, improperly handled food, or food stored in unsafe conditions for a long time.
