New Delhi: A 26-year-old Indian man, Iraganaboyina Chandu died by suicide in United States. He was a student in the country and hailed from Andhra Pradesh. He had recently completed his master’s degree from a reputed University in the US and was searching for jobs, said his family back home.

Chandu under emotional stress due to lack of job opportunities

According to a report in NDTV Chandu hailed from Kurnool district in Andhra Pradesh. He had recently completed a master’s course from DePaul University in Chicago and was actively searching for jobs for the past few weeks. However he was unable to find anything so far.

Community members and family members said that the man was under immense emotional strain having failed to land a job, after completing his degree. The family described him as a dedicated son, a devoted elder brother and a kind-hearted friend.

The man was also under stress for being financially dependent on his family back home in India. His father works as a security guard and the thought of continuously asking him for money to fulfill his needs in America, put him under constant strain.

Chandu died by suicide due to the financial strain he had been facing and also because he failed to land a job. So far no other details regarding investigations into his death have been made public, by American investigators.

Family awaits body

Meanwhile, his debt-ridden family back home in Andhra Pradesh is awaiting his body’s return. Community members have started a fundraiser to help take the body back to India. Their aim is to raise USD 1,20,000.

The fundraiser page on social media said, “The cost of international repatriation from the US to India-including funeral home services, legal permits, and transportation-is approximately $25,000. This is an expense his family simply cannot afford on their own.”

They said that any further money raised above USD 25,000 would go to the family, so that they can clear the debt that the man left behind.

Government extends help

A social media user wrote to Andhra Pradesh Minister, Nara Lokesh. Lokesh expressed condolences on the death and further tagged the Union Civil Aviation Minister, Ram Mohan Naidu in his ‘X’ post. He requested him to ensure “smooth and hassle-free transport of the mortal remains.”

Naidu responded to Lokesh saying that he had spoken to the social media user who had shared the information about the student’s death in the US. He said that he was “coordinating with the concerned people to expedite the process.”

He said that the government would make the best efforts to support the family in these tough times.
