New Delhi: Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya announced on Friday that construction work on the much-awaited Banashankari Skywalk has finally commenced after seven long years of continuous follow-ups, letters, meetings and escalations.
In a detailed thread posted on X, Surya said that the project began in 2019 when he, along with then Minister R Ashoka and BMTC Chairman Nandiesha Reddy, inspected the Banashankari TTMC and Metro station. They observed that over 50,000 commuters struggled daily to move between the bus and metro stations, highlighting the urgent need for a safe pedestrian skywalk.
By January 2022, after repeated follow-ups, BMRCL had a full design ready.
The proposal was for a circular skywalk, with greenery, resting pods, vendor space, and loops connecting the metro, Banashankari TTMC.
Beautiful on paper. Still not on the ground.

By January 2022, after repeated follow-ups, the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) prepared a full design for a modern circular skywalk featuring greenery, resting pods, vendor spaces, and loops connecting the metro station and Banashankari TTMC.
In November 2023, Surya met Deputy Chief Minister and Bengaluru Development Minister DK Shivakumar and specifically requested expediting the skywalk project. In February 2024, he met the then BBMP Chief Commissioner Tushar Girinath, resulting in Rs 50 crore being allocated in the BBMP budget.
Despite the financial sanction, progress remained slow. During a site inspection in September 2024, Surya noted that “not an inch had moved” and publicly flagged the delay, urging better coordination between BMRCL and BBMP. Tenders were finally called in April 2025, with BMRCL committing to a 15-month construction timeline.
Surya said that the Banashankari Skywalk “is for YOU,” the hardworking Bengalurean rushing between metro and bus, mothers concerned about their children’s safety and senior citizens navigating the busy junction every day.
He said that while the project was technically ready by 2022, it took until 2025 to reach the tender stage and 2026 for work to begin. “This skywalk story reflects how urban infra planning works — or doesn’t — without political & citizen pressure,” he said.
Surya assured that his office will track the project publicly, month by month, just as they did with other initiatives, to ensure completion within the committed 15-month timeline.
