Gerwyn Price is set to switch sports and compete in a pool tournament, which is being hosted at the same time as the Premier League Darts play-offs. Price is ranked seventh in the world and is currently on course to finish inside the top four spots in the Premier League.

Should he do so, the Welshman will earn a spot in the play-offs set to be held on Thursday, May 28 at London's O2 Arena. The only issue for Price is that the UK Open Pool Championship is taking place at the same time.

Price has raised eyebrows by announcing his intention to compete in the tournament, which is not only a change of sport, but also casts doubt on his Premier League participation. The Iceman has never won the Premier League, coming closest in 2023 when he finished as runner-up.

The UK Open Pool Championship is set to get underway at the Brentwood Centre, the week commencing Monday, May 25. Price is one of 256 players, including 128 professionals, from more than 50 countries competing for a chunk of the £167,500 prize fund.

Commenting on his entry, Price told Sky Sports on Thursday: "I went and watched the Mosconi Cup and have taken some interest in nine-ball pool, and got an invite to the UK Open.

"So, I'll take it with both hands and give it a crack. Hopefully I make the Premier League Darts Play-Offs, first of all. If I do, with the pool, I think I could possibly play on the Tuesday. It's double-elimination, so I'll still be in for a couple days after that.

"Then maybe break up a bit on Thursday [for the darts], and Friday-Saturday I should be playing [pool] again hopefully. I'm in it to win it," he added. "I wouldn't turn up if I didn't think I could win. I'm half decent! They're good players but I'm there to win."

Also among the entrants is talkSPORT host, Andy Goldstein, who is a dab hand at pool and played in last year's event. The radio presenter recently called out Price asking for a match-up, saying with tongue in cheek: "Hopefully they'll be a game before that [the UK Open] where I take on Gerwyn Price.

"He fancies himself as a bit of a pool player. If he's anything like he is at darts, I'll have no problem with him. I'm waiting for you Pricey, first to 10, I'll even give him a four rack start."
