New Delhi: If today you suddenly hear a loud beep on your mobile phone or start hearing any warning to disaster in the voice of a man or woman, then you do not need to be afraid at all. Actually, this is not a sign of any malfunction or any danger in your phone, but a very important security exercise of the Government of India.
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has decided to conduct a nationwide trial of ‘Cell Broadcast Alert System’ today i.e. Saturday, May 2, 2026, to further strengthen the country’s emergency communication system.
According to media reports, during this drill, an ’emergency alert notification’ will be sent to the mobile phones of citizens. As soon as this message arrives on your phone, a loud sound (beep) may be heard in the phone or the phone may vibrate rapidly. Officials have appealed to the public not to panic at all during this period. This alert is not for any real threat, but is merely a ‘mock drill’ being conducted to test the robustness of the system. Andhra Pradesh Disaster Management Authority has also shared a post on social media platform X and advised people to remain calm.
This special test of the government will be conducted simultaneously in the capitals of all the states and union territories of the country including Delhi-NCR. However, due to security and administrative reasons, border areas and those states where the election process is currently going on have been kept out of this drill. In all other major cities this alert can pop-up on your phone screen any time today.
The notification that will come on your phone during this emergency drill will be only a ‘test message’. Its main objective is to check whether the government is able to provide information to crores of people simultaneously during a disaster or not. Officials have made it clear that the purpose of this alert is to test the efficiency of the system. So when this message comes on your phone, consider it as normal and continue your daily routine.
The main objective of this entire campaign is to provide timely correct information and warnings to the people during actual disasters (like floods, earthquakes or cyclones). The government wants that our communication system should be so prepared that no one gets killed in times of crisis. Officials have once again urged people not to pay attention to any kind of rumor regarding this drill and not to panic.
