New Delhi: Noted lyricist and writer Prasoon Joshi has been appointed chairman of Prasar Bharati, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting said on Saturday.

The ministry said Joshi brings extensive experience across literature, advertising, cinema and public communication. It added that his work has helped shape modern media narratives in India.

Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw congratulated Joshi and described him as a “rare creative spirit.” He said that under his “stewardship”, Prasar Bharati would “discover renewed energy, deeper purpose, and a fresh creative voice.”

Ministry highlights creative contributions

In its official statement, the ministry said Joshi is known for his impactful writing and strong cultural understanding. It said his work includes film lyrics, advertising campaigns and storytelling that connects with audiences across the country.

“His body of work spans acclaimed film lyrics, advertising campaigns, and socially resonant storytelling that connects with diverse audiences across the country,” the statement said.

Role at film certification body

Joshi has also served as chairperson of the Central Board of Film Certification since August 2017. The ministry said he strengthened film certification processes during his tenure while engaging with stakeholders in the industry.

“His tenure at CBFC reflected a balanced approach towards creative expression and regulatory responsibility,” the statement said.

Before this, Joshi worked as chief executive officer of McCann World Group India and chairman of McCann World Group Asia Pacific.

Sehgal resigned last year

Joshi replaces Navneet Kumar Sehgal, who stepped down from the post in December last year. Sehgal, a retired IAS officer from the 1988 Uttar Pradesh cadre, had taken charge as chairman on March 16, 2024.

The ministry said it accepted his resignation under provisions of the Prasar Bharati Act, 1990 and relieved him from service with immediate effect.

Sehgal had over 35 years of administrative experience. He held key roles in tourism, MSME, information and energy departments, and worked on initiatives such as the One District One Product programme, power reforms and infrastructure projects.

With Joshi’s appointment, the government expects fresh direction in content and communication at the public broadcaster.
