The Chennai Super Kings captain Ruturaj Gaikwad was seen wearing shorts while attending the post-match presentations with former cricketer-turned-commentator Ian Bishop. Ruturaj came in to receive his Player of the Match award after leading the CSK with the bat to an 8-wicket dominating win against the Mumbai Indians at the Chepauk.

There, Rutu was seen wearing his practice shorts. This raises the question of whether he might face disciplinary actions in the Indian Premier League or not.

Notably, before the IPL started, all teams were made aware of certain rules, which included the Clothing and Equipment Regulations. Clause C.5 of the TATA IPL 2026 Clothing and Equipment Regulations clearly prohibits shorts, sleeveless jerseys, slippers, and even floppy hats while attending presentations.

The clause reads,

"Players and support staff attending post-match presentation ceremonies, press conferences and television interviews conducted before, during or after the Match must be in Playing Clothing or Practice Clothing (excluding vests and shorts) including shoes."

In that case, Rutu attending the presentation wearing shorts is a clear violation of the regulation. Earlier, in the match between Punjab Kings and Lucknow Super Giants, PBKS skipper Shreyas Iyer exchanged his slippers with a PBKS cameraperson's shoe before attending the post-match presentation, and the moment went viral on the internet.

Will Ruturaj Gaikwad be punished for the shorts?

Likely. Ruturaj Gaikwad may face disciplinary actions for his attire. He will likely get an official warning from the match referee. However, a second breach for the same reason may lead to a financial penalty.

While Gaikwad has already been heavily penalised this season with a 12 lakh fine for a slow over-rate offence, that was a separate breach under Article 2.22 of the Code of Conduct. Attire violations fall under a different regulatory category, meaning this new incident will be treated as a fresh case by the BCCI and the IPL Governing Council

Notably, Mumbai Indians posted 159/7, powered by Naman Dhir’s 57 and Rickelton’s 37, while Kamboj claimed 3 wickets. Chennai Super Kings chased 160 comfortably in 18.1 overs, led by Gaikwad’s unbeaten 67 and Kartik Sharma’s 54, sealing an eight-wicket win with 11 balls remaining.
