Anthony Gordon has officially joined FC Barcelona, becoming the latest addition to the Catalan side’s attacking line-up under new head coach Hansi Flick. The 25-year-old winger, widely regarded as one of Europe’s most promising forwards during his time at Newcastle United, has penned a contract that runs until 2031. Barcelona secured his transfer from Newcastle for a base fee of EUR 70 million, potentially rising to EUR 80 million with performance-related add-ons. Despite competition from Liverpool and Bayern Munich, the Spanish champions acted swiftly to secure Gordon’s signature.

Born in the Kirkdale area of Liverpool, Gordon began his footballing journey in Liverpool’s youth academy before switching to Everton at the age of 11. Making his senior debut as a teenager, he quickly established himself as a vital player for Everton, playing a key role in their fight against relegation. His performances earned him a move to Newcastle United in January 2023, where he rose to prominence as one of the Premier League’s standout wide players. In his first full campaign at St James’ Park, Gordon scored 12 goals and provided 10 assists, earning Newcastle’s Player of the Season award. Known for his explosive speed, dribbling skills, and tireless energy, he became one of the club’s most influential figures.

At his official unveiling at the Spotify Camp Nou, Gordon described his transfer as the realisation of his lifelong dream. “This is the biggest club on the planet,” he said. “It’s something I dreamt of as a kid. Honestly, it’s a dream come true to be here.” He added, “I know this move carries a lot of responsibility, but I’m fully prepared for this challenge and the expectations that come with it.” The English international also shared that he had been learning Spanish for some time, anticipating a future move to Barcelona. “I always wanted to speak Spanish because, even as a child, I believed I would one day play for Barca. At Newcastle, I had a Spanish physio, and we’d talk every day. I told him, one day I’ll play for Barca, so I need to learn Spanish.”

Gordon will now link up with the England squad for the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign before joining Barcelona’s pre-season preparations. At the Camp Nou, he is expected to slot into an attacking trio alongside Lamine Yamal and Raphinha as the club aims for success both in La Liga and across European competitions.
