Delhi. Three batsmen who have been in the race for the Orange Cap during IPL 2026 for a long time were on the field during Qualifier 2 in New Chandigarh on Friday night. In such a situation, it was almost certain that some major change could be seen in the Orange Cap list. There was a big change in the Purple Cap list and now Bhuvneshwar Kumar is no longer at number one.
Vaibhav Suryavanshi, B Sai Sudarshan and Shubman Gill all three left their mark in the big match. Suryavanshi came out to bat first. In the last match, he came very close to scoring the fastest century in IPL history. This time the circumstances were different and he showed some restraint, but still played a brilliant inning of 96 runs in 47 balls. He missed out on his second century of the season, but that didn’t take the shine off his campaign.
Suryavanshi ended IPL 2026 with 776 runs. What was even more surprising was his strike rate of 237.30. However, the biggest star of this match was Gill. He led GT’s run chase by scoring 104 runs in 53 balls.
With this century his season’s runs reached 722. He is still 54 runs behind Suryavanshi, but he still has a chance to play the final. Sai Sudarshan is also in the same situation. He added 167 runs for the first wicket with Gill and scored 58 runs in 32 balls. However, for the second consecutive match, he was out after being hit wicket.
Despite this, he now has 710 runs to his name. Both Gill and Sudarshan will be eyeing the Orange Cap along with the IPL trophy when GT take on Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the final on Sunday. At the same time, it now appears difficult for Virat Kohli to win the Orange Cap. RCB’s most successful batsman Kohli is currently on 600 runs.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who held the purple cap for a long time, has finally moved away from the top position. His nearest rival Kagiso Rabada has now captured the Purple Cap.
Rabada took the wicket of Dhruv Jurel in the second over of RR’s innings and then dismissed Suryavanshi in the 18th over. With these two wickets, Rabada’s total wickets have become 28. He has gone two wickets ahead of Bhuvneshwar. Now both the bowlers will face each other in the final.
Joffra Archer was also in the race for the Purple Cap. There were expectations from him after taking three wickets in two consecutive matches, but against GT he ended up taking one wicket and giving away 45 runs. He ended the season in third place with 25 wickets.
Rashid Khan could not take a wicket in this match and ended up spending 45 runs in two overs. But Jason Holder showed excellent control despite Suryavanshi’s aggressive batting and took two wickets for 27 runs in four overs.
