New Delhi, 30 May 2026: Historic progress has been recorded in the field of digital access and economic empowerment of women in the country. According to the National Family Health Survey report released today, the number of women using the Internet in India has almost doubled in the last few years. According to the report, during the year 2019-21, only 33.3 percent women used the Internet sometimes. Whereas according to the figures of 2023-24, this proportion has increased to 64.3 percent. This means that almost two-thirds of the women of the country are now connected to the internet world. Experts are considering this as a positive sign of increasing digital participation of women and easy access to technology.

The percentage of women having mobile phones increased from 53.9 percent to 63.6 percent.

Not only the Internet, there has been significant improvement in the economic condition of women as well. According to the survey, the number of women having their own bank or savings account has increased from 78.6 percent to 89 percent. Apart from this, the percentage of women owning mobile phones has increased from 53.9 percent to 63.6 percent. This change shows that women are now becoming more self-reliant than before, both financially and digitally. This report has also revealed an encouraging picture regarding the health of adolescent girls and girls. The percentage of use of safe and clean menstrual products among women in the age group of 15 to 24 years has increased from 77.6 percent to 79.2 percent. The government says that schemes like Menstrual Hygiene Scheme and providing cheap sanitary pads through Jan Aushadhi Kendras have played an important role in bringing this awareness.

The Union Health Ministry said that the survey results show continuous improvement in maternal and child health, nutrition, women empowerment and access to basic services. However, the report also warns that non-communicable diseases like diabetes, high blood pressure, unbalanced lifestyle and increasing obesity are emerging as a new challenge. This survey was conducted during 2023-24 under the supervision of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and the International Institute for Population Sciences (IIPS) was its nodal agency. About 6.79 lakh families from 715 districts of the country were included in this survey.

It is clear from this report that the impact of government initiatives like ‘Digital India’ and ‘Financial Inclusion’ is now being seen at the ground level in the lives of the women of the country. Internet, mobile phones and banking services are giving new opportunities to women and leading them towards a bright future.
