monsoon alert: The IMD has issued a ‘Red Alert’ for coastal districts, and people are advised to remain vigilant. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued alerts regarding heavy rainfall in several states across the country. Meanwhile, residents of the national capital, Delhi, and the surrounding NCR regions may face scorching heat today. According to the IMD, a sharp rise in maximum temperatures is expected in the Delhi-NCR area; intense daytime sunlight and hot winds could cause discomfort.


The IMD stated that the monsoon is likely to advance further over the central Arabian Sea, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and the remaining parts of the Northeastern states over the next 3-4 days. Let us look at the states for which the Meteorological Department has issued rainfall alerts.


According to the Meteorological Department, on June 8, 2026, the Southwest Monsoon advanced over the west-central and east-central Arabian Sea, parts of Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana. On June 8, the Northern Limit of the Monsoon passed through 18°N/60°E, 18°N/65°E, 18°N/70°E, Harnai, Solapur, Kalaburagi, Nandyal, Chennai, 15.5°N/85°E, 22°N/90.0°E, Kailashahar, Lumding, North Lakhimpur, and 29°N/95°E.


According to the Meteorological Department, heavy rainfall is highly likely over Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Northeast India, and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal over the next seven days. Very heavy rainfall is expected at isolated places in Karnataka and Kerala on June 9, 2026.



What will the weather be like in UP today?
The weather is expected to remain dry across most parts of Uttar Pradesh on June 9. People may have to endure the brunt of scorching heat. Currently, there are few indications of rainfall in Eastern and Western UP. In such conditions, humidity and heat may cause discomfort to people.


Heat Wave in Bihar and Jharkhand
According to the Meteorological Department, cloudy skies and scattered rainfall may be observed in some areas of Bihar. Meanwhile, weather conditions will also vary across parts of Jharkhand, although there is no likelihood of rain for the time being.


Weather in Rajasthan and Central India
The weather will remain dry in the western parts of Rajasthan on June 9. While skies may remain cloudy in some areas of eastern Rajasthan, there is currently no chance of rain.



Heatwave warnings for these states
Heatwave alerts have been issued for eastern Madhya Pradesh (June 10–11), eastern Uttar Pradesh (June 9–10), and Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi (June 9–11). Additionally, alerts regarding afternoon heatwave conditions have been issued for Himachal Pradesh (June 9–10), Punjab (June 9–11), western Madhya Pradesh (June 10–11), and western Rajasthan (June 8–11).


Weather in Northwest India


According to the IMD, scattered rainfall is expected in parts of Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad, and Uttarakhand between June 9 and 14. Apart from this, an alert was issued for Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and Punjab in anticipation of light rain between June 11 and 14. Rain is also expected in Western Uttar Pradesh between June 10 and 14.
