A terrible incident that puts relationships to shame has come to light in Belagavi district of Karnataka. A man named Santosh Patayat, resident of Shindikurabet village of Gokak taluk, brutally murdered his wife Sakkubai Patayat. The husband’s crime was not only that he killed his wife, but he also committed this crime to continue his illicit relationship with a widowed woman. The promptness of the police exposed the drama of the accused, which he was trying to name as a ‘road accident’. Accused Santosh took his wife Sakkubai to Chamundeshwari temple in Belhongal taluk and made her drink ‘poison’ on the pretext of temple. While returning from the temple, he hatched a well thought out conspiracy. He mixed rat poison and powder of glass bangles in a cold drink and gave it to his wife, saying that it was ‘temple prasad’. As soon as Sakkubai became unconscious as soon as the poison took effect, her cruel husband strangled her to death on the roadside. Drama was created in the accident, police’s suspicion revealed the secret. To prove the murder as suicide or an accident, the accused dropped his motorcycle on the body of Sakkubai, so that it could be shown as a road accident. Not only this, he stood at the spot for hours and then himself called the police control room and informed about the accident. However, the experience of the police investigation team came in handy and after seeing the condition of the body, they found the case not of an accident but of murder. When the post mortem report confirmed strangulation and poisoning, the whole truth came out. The illicit relationship was going on for four years. During interrogation, Santosh confessed to his crime. He told that he was married to Sakkubai 9 years ago, but for the last 4 years he was in a relationship with a widow from his own village. He wanted to spend the rest of his life with her, for which he took this dreadful decision of getting his wife out of the way. At present Santosh has been arrested and sent to Hindalga jail. The police is now also investigating whether the widow woman had any direct role in this conspiracy or not.
