Colombia secured a 1-0 victory over DR Congo in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with Daniel Munoz scoring the decisive goal in the 76th minute to help his side reach the knockout stage for the first time since 2014.
While the result marked an important achievement for Colombia, it proved to be a frustrating evening for Luis Diaz, who remained heavily involved in the team's attacking play throughout the match.
Shortly after Munoz broke the deadlock, Diaz thought he had doubled Colombia’s lead. In the 79th minute, the winger finished off a solo move, but the goal was disallowed because of a foul during the build-up.
Just one minute later, Diaz found the net again after collecting a pass from midfield, driving into the penalty area and producing a composed finish. However, the goal was ruled out for offside, leaving the forward visibly disappointed.
Diaz was caught offside five times during the match, the highest total recorded by a player in a single World Cup game in the last 12 years.
Despite creating opportunities and remaining active in attack, the Colombian star was unable to convert his efforts into a goal. He registered five shots, produced two key passes and completed one of his three attempted dribbles.
The decisive moment came through Munoz, whose second goal in as many matches proved enough to separate the teams and secure Colombia's place in the next round of the tournament.
Diaz entered the World Cup following an outstanding 2025/26 season with Bayern Munich. The winger scored 26 goals and provided 19 assists across all competitions as the German club completed a domestic league and cup double.
Having missed out on the 2022 FIFA World Cup with Colombia after a disappointing qualification campaign, Diaz now has the opportunity to showcase his talent on football’s biggest stage as Colombia continue their journey in the 2026 tournament.
