Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modistrongly opposing the Centre’s proposed disinvestment of its equity in NLC India Ltd (Neyveli Lignite Corporation) and urging the Union government to reconsider the move.
In his letter, Vijay argued that NLC India is a strategic national asset that plays a crucial role in India’s energy security, mineral development, and critical infrastructure.
“The Government of Tamil Nadu is of the considered view that NLC India is not merely a listed company but a strategic national asset engaged in energy security, mineral development and critical infrastructure,” the Chief Minister wrote.
He further said that any additional dilution of the Centre’s stakeeven if limited, would set an undesirable precedent for strategically important public sector enterprises.
According to the letter, the proposed disinvestment raises concerns that extend beyond financial considerations and could have implications for Tamil Nadu’s long-term interests, the welfare of its people, and the country’s energy security.
Vijay urged the Prime Minister to reconsider the proposed stake salestressing that maintaining public ownership of strategically significant enterprises like NLC India is essential for safeguarding national and state interests.
