The India National Cricket Team is currently touring Ireland and has already played the opening match of the two match T20I series. On Friday, at the Civil Service Cricket Club in Stormont, Belfast, Lorcan Tucker’s young Ireland side kind of made history by pulling off their first ever victory over India across every format, like really across all formats.
Shreyas Iyer and his crew ended up taking a surprising 34-run defeat against a lively Irish side. Abhishek Sharma was India’s top scorer , smashing 49 runs off just 20 balls . That said the other batters couldn’t really stitch things together, kept losing wickets when things got intense in the middle overs and in the end India were bowled out for 148.
Speaking after the match, Abhishek Sharma didn’t tone it down when he assessed India’s batting. The left handed opener also talked about teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, and explained how the group has been working to help the 15-year-old get comfortable in the senior setup after his standout shows in the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, the U-19 World Cup, and List A cricket.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi got his maiden India call-up after a frankly standout IPL season with Rajasthan Royals (RR). The young opener sort of popped off, he became the youngest player to lift the Orange Cap by making 776 runs, and yes that put him as the tournament top run getter. He even won the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award at just 15 years old, which honestly sounds unreal, but it happened.
During a chat with reporters, Abhishek mentioned that Vaibhav is always keen to pick up things from seasoned players. He went on to say that the coaching staff and the whole squad are trying their best, to help the youngster settle in, and to adjust to international cricket, like it’s not a big shock.
Abhishek Coimmented: "As a team, I think it's our responsibility to make him comfortable. And obviously he is a young guy and what I felt, he is very curious to play all the time. He is just learning right now. He asks questions, so I feel he has that in himself, where he wants to learn a lot of things, and obviously it's a dream for him too. So we are trying our best to make him feel that he belongs in the group."

After all that, Vaibhav not making it into the playing XI became one of the main talking points, because he missed out on his senior international debut even with that impressive run of form. Still, India kept faith with their opening duo of Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma, the same pair that had a big role in the team T20 World Cup triumph.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has stayed in the spotlight for the past few months, especially after that blistering 94 run knock in just 29 balls during the List A Tri-Series final against Sri Lanka A. Even though his long awaited senior debut didn’t arrive in the first T20I on Friday, people are pretty sure, he will finally start his international career in the series finale on Sunday.
