Blue veins appearing in the legs can often be a sign of a serious illness. These veins are commonly called varicose veins. These veins appear swollen and bulging and are often blue or purple in color in the legs.

Why do varicose veins occur?

Varicose veins can occur for several reasons, including:

  • Pressure in veins: Standing or sitting for a long time puts pressure on the veins of the legs, which can cause varicose veins.

  • Poor blood circulation: Improper blood circulation can also cause varicose veins.

  • Genetic causes: If someone in your family has had the problem of varicose veins, then you too are at higher risk of getting it.

  • Age: With increasing age, the walls of the veins become weak, due to which the risk of varicose veins increases.

  • Hormonal changes: Pregnancy, obesity and hormonal changes can also cause varicose veins.

  • Compression Stockings: These stockings help improve blood flow in the legs.

  • Sclerotherapy: In this procedure, a special medicine is injected into the vein, which causes the veins to shrink.

  • Laser Therapy: The veins are closed using a laser.

  • Surgery: In severe cases surgery may be required.
