Trinamool MP Kalyan Banerjee injured himself on Tuesday during a meeting of the Joint Committee on Waqf Bill. The incident took place when an argument with BJP's Abhijit Gangopadhyay turned dramatic, and the TMC MP smashed a glass water bottle on a table before throwing it away. This injured him, hurting his thumb and index finger.

Banerjee was given first aid and had to reportedly get four stitches. The Joint Committee meeting, which was held at the Parliament Annexe, had to be halted briefly after the incident.

The committee, chaired by BJP's Jagdambika Pal, was listening to the views of a group of retired judges and lawyers when the Opposition members questioned their stake in the bill.

In a video shared by news agency PTI, he was later seen being escorted back to the meeting room by AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi and AAP leader Sanjay Singh.

The TMC member was also offered soup by the officials after he was given first aid.

These panel meetings have been marred by heated exchanges between the BJP MPs and Opposition members. Last week, Banerjee was involved in another heated argument with BJP MPs Dilip Saikia, Nishikant Dubey, and Abhijit Ganguly.

The Opposition had also accused the BJP MPs of walking out of the meeting and of using inappropriate language.

According to PTI, the parliamentary committee on Waqf Bill is considering a proposal to suspend the TMC MP for his unruly conduct during the panel meet.
