Dhaka: At least nine people have been arrested in connection with the murder of a lawyer during the violence in Chittagong, Bangladesh. Assistant public prosecutor Saiful Islam was arrested after a case was registered against 46 people for their involvement in the murder, police said. Most of whom are sanitation workers from the minority Hindu community.

Islam was around 30 years of age. The incident took place on Tuesday during a clash between supporters of Hindu community leader Chinmoy Krishna Das and security personnel. Earlier, a Chittagong court had refused to grant bail to Das and sent him to jail. Das, spokesperson of Bangladesh-based Sanatani Jagran Jot, was arrested from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport here on Monday in a sedition case.

Chittagong Kotwali police station officer-in-charge Abdul Karim said that Saiful Islam's father has registered a case against 46 people last night. Karim said that most of the accused are residents of Sebok Colony of the city, where mostly sanitation workers belonging to the Hindu community live.

The in-charge said that nine accused have been arrested and a search operation is going on to arrest others. He said that the accused have been identified from the CCTV footage of the court complex, the scene of the violence that took place on November 26. Police said that a person named Chandan Das is the main accused, who was seen attacking the lawyer with a sharp weapon.

The incident sparked outrage across the country and lawyers and political groups took to the streets demanding strict punitive action against Islam killers, while some groups wanted ISKCON Bangladesh to be banned. However, ISKCON Bangladesh said That Das was expelled from the organization long before his arrest and that ISKCON is not involved in the murder or violence. (agency)
