According to Deadline, screenwriter Richard Curtis recently disclosed that actress Julia Roberts rejected a possible mini-sequel to the movie after reading the suggested scenario.

In an interview with IndieWire, Curtis said that Roberts declined to work on the film when she learned that the sequel would have her character, Anna Scott, divorcing Hugh Grant’s William Thacker, according to Deadline.

Roger Michell is the director of the 1999 romantic comedy Notting Hill. The plot centers on the developing relationship between a well-known American actress (Julia Roberts) and a British bookseller (Hugh Grant), who happens to drop by his shop in London’s Notting Hill neighborhood.

The movie ended happily with the pair getting married.

Curtis has previously been successful in bringing the Love Actually actors back together for short British TV movies made for the annual Red Nose Day charity event. Nevertheless, Roberts resisted a similar attempt for Notting Hill.

“I actually did four Red Nose Days and Comic Relief,” Curtis said, acknowledging that he is not too interested in full-length sequels. I was pleased with the Love Actually mini-sequels that we produced.

“There had been talk of a mini-Notting Hill reunion,” he said. Julia [Roberts] felt it was a really bad idea when I attempted to do one with Notting Hill, where they were going to be divorced.

Considering his part in Notting Hill, Hugh Grant offered his own thoughts on the character, calling him “despicable.”

Grant mentioned a specific moment in the movie when Julia’s character, Anna, answers the door when paparazzi come at William’s home. “I believe I just opened the door and let her pass me. That’s terrible. No girlfriend or wife I’ve ever had has ever said, “Why in the world didn’t you stop her?” What’s the matter with you? And because it was phrased that way, I really don’t have a response.

According to Deadline, Grant told Vanity Fair, “And I think he’s despicable, really.”

Apart from her part in Notting Hill, Julia Roberts is renowned for her roles in movies such as Ocean’s Twelve, My Best Friend’s Wedding, Erin Brockovich, and Pretty Woman.
