The West African country Ghana remains in the headlines. Recently an incident came to light in a gold mine in the country, where 9 people died. The Ghana Small Scale Miners Association said on Sunday that soldiers killed nine unarmed miners at the AngloGold Ashanti mine on Saturday night, while on the other hand, the army says that seven illegal miners have been killed in the firing.
While on one hand the National Association of Small Scale Miners says that the army killed unarmed miners, on the other hand the army had already said that about 60 illegal miners armed with locally made rifles and other weapons broke the security of the mine at around 11:00 pm on Saturday night and opened fire on an army team deployed there, after which the army also opened fire and 9 miners died in this.
Kofi Adams said, “It is difficult to understand why this happened,” he also said, adding that earlier when a miner made such a mistake, he was only warned and intimidated. After this incident in the country, Ghana's President John Dramani Mahama has ordered an immediate investigation into the incident, the President described it as "tragic" in a statement on Sunday. The President's statement said that the government has asked AngloGold Ashanti to cover the cost of treatment and funeral of the injured.
