Indian-American entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, picked by US President-elect Donald Trump to co-lead the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) with Elon Musk, is expected to step away from the role, a report has said.

Ramaswamy, who had an unsuccessful run in the Republican presidential race, may announce a campaign for Ohio Governor later this month, CBS News reported quoting multiple sources.

The report said that people close to Ekon Musk have "privately undercut Ramaswamy for weeks" due to frustration over his limited involvement in the actual work required. It further said that Ramaswamy has been subtly encouraged to exit.

Donald Trump had appointed Ramaswamy to co-lead DOGE, which will function independently of the government, alongside Musk. The agency is tasked with improving government efficiency and will provide advisory and guidance to the White House.

The report said that Ramaswamy was at Mar-a-Lago during the transition. He was spotted at the bar with Elon Musk, scratching out plans for DOGE, as per sources. However, the pair haven't worked closely for a while.

Meanwhile, Trump, who will be sworn in as the 47th US President on Monday, addressed a pre-inauguration rally in Washington on Sunday, where he said, "We have him, Vivek (Ramaswamy) and some great people working on a thing called COSTS. He’s got the credibility to do it too. We are going to do things that are really amazing."

Ramaswamy recently met with Ohio’s incumbent governor, Mike DeWine, regarding the Senate seat left vacant by Vice President-elect JD Vance. However, DeWine on Friday announced that he would appoint his lieutenant governor to the position.

Reacting to a parody post on X claiming that Ramaswamy maybe candidacy for governor of Ohio, the India-origin entrepreneur said, "Note - the below is a parody account. (Not a bad idea, though)."

The Department of Government Efficiency is not expected to be a full-fledged federal agency in the Trump government. The Republican President has said it "will provide advice and guidance from outside of Government" and partner with the White House and Office of Management and Budget.
