The big AI battle has got people excited but the experts in this domain are worried about how the technology is evolving and whether the safety aspect is in their focus. These details come via Yoshua Bengio, who is the lead author of a report and is known as one of the godfathers of AI in the modern era.

The report quotes Bengio, who highlights the risk factor of AI with the technology advancing at a rapid pace, and the presence of companies like DeepSeek and OpenAI now going against each other without actually putting the guard rails around their development.

He has also mentioned the concerns around DeepSeek and how these AI startups need to slow down their progress to seriously consider the safety regulations and ethical policies while they develop these AI models.

He is also worried that a close fight between these AI companies will invariably push them to build new applications and the pace of their development will most likely affect how safe and ethical they are.

“If you imagine a competition between two entities and one thinks they are way ahead, then they can afford to be more prudent and still know that they will stay ahead. Whereas if you have competition between two entities and they think that the other is just at the same level, then they need to accelerate. Then maybe they don’t give as much attention to safety," Bengio was quoted saying in a Guardian interview.

AI safety has been critically highlighted in the first AI Safety report which came out in 2023 and Bengio is part of the team along with over 90 experts. The report is also critical about the use of AI in cybercrime and building tools for malicious applications in major sectors.

The US government is also worried about the pace at which DeepSeek AI is developing and becoming a rival to OpenAI and other US-based giants. The White House AI chief has even alleged that DeepSeek AI models are built using OpenAI models, something the AI giant is also internally investigating and looking to fix any possible loopholes.
