Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel on Tuesday announced the formation of a five-member committee to draft the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) for the state. The committee, chaired by retired Supreme Court judge Ranjana Desai, has been assigned the task of preparing a detailed report on the proposed legislation.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghvi said, "Chief Minister of Gujarat, Bhupendrabhai Patel has formed the UCC (Uniform Civil Code) committee. It will be headed by former Supreme Court judge, Justice (retd) Ranjana Desai, retired senior IAS officer CL Meena, Advocate RC Kodekar, former Vice Chancellor Dakshesh Thakar and social worker Gita Shroff will also be a part of this committee. The Chief Minister has directed this committee to do detailed research on it in the next 45 days and present a report to the government."



To implement the Common Civil Code in the state, a committee has been formed under the chairmanship of Ranjana Desai.

The committee will consist of five members:


  1. Ranjana Desai – Retired Supreme Court Judge

  2. CL Meena

  3. RC Kodekar

  4. Dakshesh Thakar

  5. Geeta Shroff


This committee will submit its report to the state government within 45 days, based on which the government will take a final decision.

Gujarat CM Bhupendra Patel said, "To prepare the draft for the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) and make the law, a 5-member committee under the chairmanship of retired Supreme Court judge Ranjana Desai has been constituted. The committee will submit its report to the state government in 45 days, based on which the government will take a decision."



Earlier in 2022, the BJP government in Gujarat announced the formation of the committee. "We are going ahead to give equal rights to all citizens and therefore, we are setting up this committee to examine the requirements of UCC," Bhupendra Patel told reporters.
