The IPL 2025 season is set to start from Tomorrow but before this BCCI is set to make this massive changes in IPL rule.

So, here’s what’s happening with captains in the Indian Premier League when it comes to over-rate issues. Instead of getting banned, they’ll just be given demerit points. This decision was made during a meeting with the captains in Mumbai not too long ago. The change comes after some drama with Hardik Pandya and Rishabh Pant, who were leading their teams, the Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals. They got banned for one match because their teams messed up the over-rate for the third time during the 2024 season. Just a heads up, Hardik will miss the first game of the 2025 season against CSK because of that ban.

Now, how does this new system work? If a captain’s team falls into the Level 1 offence category, they could lose between 25% and 75% of their match fee and earn some demerit points too. These points aren’t just a one-time deal; they stick around for three years. If things get worse and the offence is more serious, which is called a Level 2 offence, they could end up with four demerit points.

Here’s where it gets a bit more serious: for every four demerit points a captain racks up, the match referee can decide to impose a penalty. This could mean either a hefty fine of 100% of their match pay or even more demerit points. There’s a catch, too: while these demerit points might eventually lead to a match ban down the line for other issues, slow over-rate offences won’t lead to a ban. This new rule seems to be a way to hold captains accountable without going straight to harsh punishments. Sounds like everyone is trying to keep it fair and manageable, right?
