News India Live, Digital Desk: Tragic downfall: There was once a name in the Indian retail (retail) sector that shone like gold – Kishore Biyani! He was called the ‘Retail King’ of India. He had many big brands like Big Bazaar, Pantalons, Foodbasket, Hometown, which became a favorite of every Indian family. The market value of his companies was once for thousands of crores, and his dream was to deliver his brand to every Indian house. But look at the game of destiny, today his own companies have been bought by big rivals and Biyani herself has also fallen victim to a oblivion. After all, where and how it deteriorated?
Kishore Biyani’s rise was no less than a fairy tale. He revolutionized the retail by providing better quality products to the middle class at cheap prices. Big Bazaar became a one-stop shop for Indians, where they could get everything from clothes to house ration. His model was of ‘Large Format Stores’, in which a lot of products were available under one roof, and people liked the experience of shopping coming in these stores.
But, his ‘shopping world’ came to a turn where he faced serious challenges:
Curz Burden: Kishore Biyani picked up a heavy loan at a high speed of expansion. He continuously opened new stores, invested in new business, but this increased his financial burden.
Rise of e-commerce: When he was focusing on the expansion of his offline stores, there was a revolution of online shopping in India. Platforms like Amazon, Flipkart started delivery from house to house, which changed the way of purchasing of consumers. Biyani’s strategy could not understand this change or he could not keep pace with it.
Aggressive rival: Large groups like Reliance also invested strongly in the retail sector. Reliance Retail launched platforms such as ‘Smart Bazaar’ and online Geomart, which began to compete with the model of Biyani and draw customers towards them.
Effect of covid-19: The Korona epidemic made his condition worse. The stores remained closed due to the lockdown, the sale stopped, and the debt burden increased continuously. The financial crisis deepened so much that it became impossible for him to continue his operation.
Eventually, efforts to sell the Future Group failed and had to hand over all their big companies to big investors. Many of his famous brands like Big Bazaar, Pantalons have become part of Mukesh Ambani’s portfolio today.
Kishore Biyani’s collapse shows how important it is to identify the changing winds of the market. Biyani, once a retail king of India, is in a position today that his legacy, his own dream, is no longer in his hands. This is a sad story of the retail world.
