Officials aim to match rising passenger demand and reduce congestion. The move forms part of a wider capacity expansion plan across major Indian cities over the next five years. According to the Ministry of Railways, rail capacity will be doubled in 48 large cities, including Gorakhpur and Lucknow, within five years. The ministry notes that growing passenger numbers make higher capacity essential by 2030. Trains originating from these cities are projected to increase sharply, so infrastructure must keep pace with future demand. Plans include extra platforms, stabling lines, pit lines and better shunting facilities. The ministry wants main junctions and surrounding stations to share traffic more evenly. In Gorakhpur, stations such as Cantt-Nakaha and Kusmhi are proposed for capacity enhancement to balance load with the primary junction. The Khalilabad-Shravasti-Bahraich line, about 240 kilometres long, was approved in 2018 with completion targeted between 2026 and 2029. This project aims to link less-developed pockets of Uttar Pradesh and support local growth. The route also adds capacity to the broader network that feeds trains from Gorakhpur, Lucknow and Varanasi towards other regions. The Anandnagar-Maharajganj-Ghugli rail line will run for about 52.7 kilometres from Anandnagar through Maharajganj to Ghugli. Once open, the distance from Gonda to Ghugli via Anandnagar will reduce by about 42 kilometres. Together with new bypass lines and terminal upgrades, these schemes underpin the target to double trains from NER's Gorakhpur, Lucknow and Varanasi stations by 2030.
