Taylor Swift fans have been left baffled after learning that the global pop superstar has written several songs for different artists under an unknown pseudonym.
It's not uncommon for people, especially celebrities, to use pseudonyms if they don't want recognition for their work, or want to stay anonymous. For example, author Stephen King wrote under the name Richard Bachman when his publishers claimed he was writing 'too many books', while his son Joseph uses the pen name Joe Hill, saying he hid his true identity early in his career as he wanted to succeed under his own merit rather than through his connection to his father. Swedish DJ Aviciiwas also a pseudonym that Tim Bergling used while performing.
Some singers also choose to use pseudonyms when writing songs for different artists, and global megastar Taylor Swift is no exception. The Shake It Off singer is well-known for her heartfelt and honest songwriting, often drawing from her own experiences in life and love. But not everyone realises she has also written songs for different singers.
Swift previously dated Scottish DJ Calvin Harris between 2015 and 2016. While their breakup was messy, including several harsh social media posts and tabloid revelations, fans later learned the pair had worked together on a hit song for another chart-topping singer, which Swift co-wrote the hit under the pseudonym Nils Sjöberg.
Together they wrote wrote Rihanna'shit song This Is What You Came For, which was released in 2016. While it's been nine years since the song was released, fans still are shocked to learn this fact. One fan even took to Reddit to share their revelation.
"Taylor used to use a pseudonym, Nils Sjöberg, when she wrote music for other artists, the person wrote in the Reddit post. "I looked into the real Nils Sjöberg, wondering why she chose him specifically, and as it turns out, he was a poet,"
The post also included screenshots from Wikipedia which showed the pseudonym name Nils Sjöberg could refer to a Swedish officer and poet born in 1754.
They went on to explain that the names of the poet's most famous works translate to 'The Bard', 'The Atheist', 'The Farmer', and 'Immortality', which the Reddit user went on to point out are similar to the titles of songs on Swift's 2024 album The Tortured Poets Department.
"I just find it interesting, given that so far from The Tortured Poets Department, we have 'The Alchemy,' 'The Bolter,' and 'The Albatross'," the Reddit user said.
"I just thought this was an interesting look into what possibly could've been part of her inspiration for this album."
Several people soon took to the comment section to share their thoughts on the theory, as many praised the pop star for her clever pseudonym name.
"God she’s a genius," one person wrote, while another person quoted one of the singer's songs by commenting: "Truly a mastermind," referencing a Swift song by the same name.
However, not everyone seemed to think that the name held a deeper meaning, as someone else argued: "Taylor Swift has been pretty open about why she picked the pseudonym. It’s two of the most popular male Swedish names - the equivalent of John Smith."
To this, someone else replied: "I've observed Taylor often gives *a* reason she does something, but that's not necessarily *the only* reason she does. Also, neither name is in the top 25 names in Sweden."
