The latest series of ITV's The Masked Singer has so far managed to avoid any tantrums or dramas. But last year saw a shocking moment as one contestant stormed off the stage after being voted out of the competition. Competing against Wolf, Bush, Bear, and Pufferfish, the Toad In the Hole performer sang their heart out, but it wasn't enough to save them. The regular judges Jonathan Ross, Maya Jama, Davina McCall and Mo Gilligan were joined by Suranne Jones for the episode and voted them into the bottom two before sending them home following the sing-off.
However, as host Joel Dommett confirmed the news, Toad in the Hole halted the show and walked off stage before they could remove their mask, leaving the panel and viewers at home stunned. Moments later, the character returned to the stage and was finally revealed to be American singer Macy Gray, who looked disappointed to be leaving the reality show.
However, what viewers at home didn't see is that ITV bosses had spent the best part of an hour trying to coax her out to continue the show despite the edit making it look like mere minutes.
At the time, a source told in The Sun US singer Macy, best known in Britain for her huge 1999 hit I Try, may have been expecting to reach the final, as she had done on the American version of the show just two years earlier. They said she'd been "totally blindsided" by being ousted so fast, despite her popularity as Sea Queen before, and had exploded.
They elaborated: "This has never happened on The Masked Singer before. When Macy stormed off stage, everyone was frozen in shock, but as soon as she reached backstage, the crew removed her mask so they could talk her down.
"Macy was almost shellshocked to start with and was basically gutted to be out so early because she really enjoyed being on the American version - when obviously she did brilliantly - so was totally blindsided."
Macy subsequently opened up about the incident after losing out to Bear, who turned out to be rapper Example, saying: "Yes, I'm up there singing my heart out, and some guy comes around, and they picked the guy, and the guy couldn't even sing. Yes, what am I doing here?"
She admitted she was "so offended" at losing out to him and even said that the whole experience was "not fun".
Judge Jonathan Rossalso opened up about the incident, saying: "I was a little surprised at her reaction, but I can understand why someone might feel vulnerable in that moment."
However, he pointed out: "Ultimately, it's the audience that has decided who's in the bottom two. It's not us. And I think we'd all guessed pretty much it was her by then."
