Shab-e-Baraat is considered a very important and holy night for the Muslim community. It is known as the night of forgiveness and mercy in Islam. According to the Islamic calendar, Shab-e-Baraat is celebrated on the intervening night of 14th and 15th of Shaban month. In the year 2026, this night may fall on 4th or 5th February. However, its exact date is determined only after the moon is visible.
The specialty of Shab-e-Baraat is that it is called the night of forgiveness. According to Islamic beliefs, on this night Allah opens the doors of forgiveness for His servants. People stay awake all night on this occasion, offer namaz and recite the Quran. On this night, the tradition of going to the graveyard and praying for one’s ancestors is also followed. Many people also keep Nafil Roza and ask for forgiveness of their sins. This is why Shab-e-Baraat is considered extremely sacred and spiritually important.
The holy month of Ramadan starts about 15 days after Shab-e-Barat. The beginning of Ramadan completely depends on the sighting of the moon. If the moon is visible on 18 February 2026, then the first fast of Ramzan will be observed in India from 19 February. During Ramadan, people of the Muslim community spend time in worship from sunrise to sunset, giving up food and water. This month is considered a symbol of patience, restraint and service to Allah.
After the end of Ramadan, Eid-ul-Fitr is celebrated on the first day of Shawwal. According to the calendar this year, Eid-ul-Fitr may fall on 21 March 2026 (Saturday). However, this date may also shift by one day depending on the sighting of the moon. On the day of Eid-ul-Fitr, Muslim families meet each other, offer special prayers and celebrate the festival.
Thus, Shab-e-Barat is not only the night of forgiveness and mercy, but it also signals the beginning of preparations for Ramadan and Eid-ul-Fitr. Due to the spiritual importance and religious rituals of this night, it is celebrated with great reverence and devotion in the Muslim community.
