If you and your partner would prefer to stay in this Valentine's Day, it doesn't mean romance has to be dead. You can just get yourselves an Aldi Valentine's Day deal instead and save yourself a wad of money.
In fact, for the price of this meal which my partner and I tried, it's literally cheaper than a taxi to town from where we live in peak times!
There's so much pressure to be 'romantic' on one day, forgetting it often comes in the little things, like enjoying a home-cooked meal together without any distractions.
That's where Aldi comes in. The chain's Valentine's meal offering doesn't have a set price, but the cheapest deal can see two people dining for just £2.99 each for three courses, which is almost unheard of in this economy!
Anyway, my partner and I decided to push the boat out a little and see whether Aldi's more 'luxury' options could stand up to other supermarkets' offerings, and whether it's worth paying more for them.
Starter: Specially Selected Monsigny Champagne & Vintage Cheddar Cheese Bake - £2.99
This cheese bake was almost illegal in terms of cheesiness, and it's a lovely touch that it comes in a reusable little tapas-style dish (my partner was extremely happy about this).
It was hot, it was bubbly, it's a little bit annoying it doesn't come with any bread, but that's okay, we improvised and managed to make some little bagel bites which went down a treat to mop up all the juicy goodness.
But it was a really strong start for the Aldi Valentine's meal, and I'd highly recommend you give this a go for the price.

Hear me out. The price tag may make you cringe a little bit, but if you're a dab hand in the kitchen (or you have a partner who is like I do), then there is no chance you'd be able to get this level of deliciousness for under about £60. So, for less than a tenner each, it makes it well worth it.
You get a huge slab of meat, perfect if you're hungry and feeling particularly carnivorous, and if you follow the cooking instructions properly, you'll soon be munching on the most tender Côte du Boeuf you could possibly hope for.
We were truly blown away by this, and my partner said: "I would eat that a million times over."

Side dish: Specially Selected Truffle & Parmesan Fries - £2.69You cook these like regular chips and then pop the truffle and parmesan on at the end, and they were genuinely so lovely. I'd say they were even better than some I've had in restaurants in the past. A big thumbs up from us!

Dessert: Share the Love Tear and Share Cookie with Milk Chocolate Dip - £1.99
Admittedly, things did go downhill when it came to dessert. It started off with an explosion in the microwave when two thirds of the chocolate sauce ended up coating the inside of it... less than ideal, because nobody wants to be cleaning up choccy sauce on Valentine's Day. So if you do opt for the tear and share, be careful.
Also, the actual cookie itself was fine when warmed through, but I'd just say there are far too many confetti hearts on the top, which made the cookie feel as though the texture was weird and a bit stale.
I know it wasn't, and was just the crunch of the confetti hearts, but as a cookie lover, it just sort of ruined the experience. And it's got to be taste over aesthetic for an at-home Valentine's meal!
Considering how 'easy' it is to offer a delicious and decadent dessert, I was left a little underwhelmed at Aldi's offerings, so maybe it's something for them to consider for next year.

Overall rating: 32/40The Côte du Boeuf definitely did a lot of heavy lifting for this meal deal, but my gosh, was it incredible! Overall, it was a very enjoyable meal, and I'd definitely recommend it for the price. All in all, it cost £26.42. Where would you be able to eat out for two people at such a low price with such good food?
