Asda is making a basket change at some of its UK stores this weekend in recognition of Valentine's Day. The day, which cultures across the world use to celebrate love, takes place every year on February 14. In the lead-up to it, retailers go all out with themed products, with a wealth of gift options for couples to choose from.
But Asda has also spared a thought for the singletons this year, introducing a red baskets at some branches to help shoppers "put themselves out there". A spokesperson for the supermarket chain said: "We know people are craving real-life connections, but we also know our customers are busy anddon'talways have the time to put themselves out there.
"That'swhywe'returning the weekly shop into the ultimatemeet-cute.
"These red baskets are a fun, light-hearted way to help people connect whilethey'realready doing their everyday shop - a simple, playful nudge to start a chat andmaybe evenspark a little romance."
The Valentine's Day red basket activation will be taking place at the following Asda stores on SaturdayIt comes as a poll of 2,000 people conducted for Asda suggests 64% of UK adults fancy someone at their local supermarket.
87% of those surveyed said they'd prefer to meet someone in person.
However, more than eight in 10 singles (82%) admit they feel shy about taking the plunge and asking for someone's digits.
The findings are based on a nationally representative online survey of 2,000 UK adults conducted for Asda via research and insights agency Perspectus Global last month.
