Amrit Siddhi Yoga is regarded as a highly auspicious period in the Hindu calendar. This yoga occurs when a specific alignment of a day and constellation takes place. The term "Amrit" translates to immortal, suggesting divine outcomes, while "Siddhi" signifies success. Consequently, any significant activities undertaken during this yoga are believed to yield lasting positive effects. Engaging in worship, fasting, charitable acts, chanting, or initiating new ventures is particularly favorable during this time. The importance of worship on a day when Amrit Siddhi Yoga coincides with a major festival is amplified, as it is believed to help eliminate life’s obstacles and fulfill desires.
Mahashivratri, February 15, 2026
In 2026, Mahashivratri will be observed on Sunday, February 15. This festival honors Lord Shiva and is celebrated on the Chaturdashi Tithi of the Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) in the month of Phalgun. It is believed that the sacred union of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati took place on this night, making it exceptionally holy. Devotees observe fasting and worship Lord Shiva with utmost devotion, with temples adorned for the occasion and the Shivalinga being anointed.
The night of Mahashivratri holds immense significance, with devotees traditionally keeping vigil and performing pujas during the four prahars (watches). Midnight is regarded as the most auspicious moment for worship. Engaging in mantra chanting and meditation during this time is believed to yield special merits. If Amrit Siddhi Yoga coincides with Mahashivratri, the benefits of the puja are thought to be exponentially greater.
A Simple Method of Worship According to Pandit Ji
According to Pandit Damodar Joshi, the sacred time of Amrit Siddhi Yoga is particularly potent for worshipping Lord Shiva. He emphasizes that Lord Shiva appreciates simplicity and is easily pleased. For those unable to perform elaborate rituals, chanting "Om Namah Shivaya" and offering Bael leaves and fruit is recommended. Additionally, bathing the deity with Panchamrit (a blend of milk, yogurt, ghee, honey, and sugar) is encouraged.
Correct Method of Worship
On Mahashivratri, it is advisable to rise early, take a bath, and don clean attire. Meditate on Lord Shiva and commit to fasting, which can be done without food or fruits. Clean the worship area at home and place a Shivalinga or an image of Lord Shiva there. Begin by offering water and Ganga water to the Shivalinga, followed by an anointment with milk, yogurt, and honey. After this, bathe the deity again with clean water, apply a sandalwood tilak, and present a clean bel leaf with three leaves. Offer white flowers, dhatura (sweet ash), and cannabis to Lord Shiva.
Light incense and perform aarti (waving of lights). Chant the mantra "Om Namah Shivaya" 108 times and recite the Mahamrityunjaya mantra. Conduct four-hour pujas at night, and if possible, maintain a vigil. Singing bhajans, kirtans, and reciting the Shiva Chalisa are also considered auspicious. After the puja, break the fast the following morning. Donating to those in need is also deemed beneficial. Worship performed with genuine devotion is what pleases Lord Shiva. May the auspicious occasion of Mahashivratri 2026 bring joy, peace, and prosperity to all.
