Who is Kim Keon-hee?

Kim was born Kim Myung-shin on 2 September 1972 in Yangpyeong County, Gyeonggi Province, South Korea. She attended Myungil Girls’ High School and later earned a bachelor’s degree in arts from Kyonggi University.

In 2008, she legally changed her name to Kim Keon-hee.

Career and Public Profile

Before entering the national spotlight, Kim built a career as a businesswoman in the arts and culture sector. She was the CEO and president of Covana Contentsan art exhibition company she founded in 2009. The business was active until around the time her husband assumed the presidency in 2022.

Throughout her husband’s political rise and presidency (2022–2025), Kim often attracted media attention for her fashion sense, active public role, and advocacy on cultural issues. She was known for her interest in animal rights and for breaking from the traditionally low-profile role typical of South Korean first ladies.

  • In August 2025she was arrested on corruption chargesincluding accusations of accepting luxury gifts and engaging in stock- wrongdoing. Her detention was part of a broader investigation that also targeted her husband.

  • On 28 January 2026a Seoul court sentenced Kim Keon-hee to 20 months in prison after finding her guilty of accepting bribesincluding a luxury diamond necklace and designer handbag from officials linked to the Unification Church in exchange for political favors.

Although prosecutors sought harsher penalties, including longer prison terms and significant fines, the court cleared her of some charges such as stock price manipulation due to insufficient evidence.
