The right lamp can help transform the ambience of any space, but not every corner has a socket. Rechargeable lamps are one of the quickest ways to change a room's lighting without the complications of rewiring or ugly trailing cables. Whether you're tackling an awkward corner that's far from a plug socket, aiming to create mood lighting on shelving or side tables, or are constantly rearranging furniture and want the flexibility to move a lamp wherever you want, cordless alternatives are an excellent choice.
At the moment, there are countless stylish options on the high street combining visual appeal with practicality. From striking sculptural designs at Dusk to nursery-appropriate rattan alternatives at M&S, there's truly something to accommodate every taste and space in the home.
Many are exceptionally affordable, with some sold for under £30. This makes them a perfect low-commitment update that can transform a room's ambience instantly, whilst remaining budget-friendly, reports Bristol Live.
Together with shopping writers Bethan Shufflebotham and Eve Rowlands, I have examined the high street's offerings and identified five options for elevating your home with atmospheric lighting that doesn't need a plug.
The Remi lamp is part of a matching lighting range at Dunelm, which includes ceiling lights, corner and floor lamps. It sells for £30, and is the only rechargeable item in the collection.
Design-wise, it's a more modern take on the classic table lamp shape, with a quirky twist. Both the base and the scalloped lampshade are made from a matte metal with some wooden accents, and shoppers can choose between seafoam green, heather pink and off-white.
The lamp comes with a USB-C cable for recharging and promises up to five hours of battery life.
The Remi is a perfect bedside addition but can also complement a breakfast bar, injecting some colour into spaces typically filled with black or silver kitchen appliances.
The Dunelm lamp has achieved a 4.4-star rating from customers, with one reviewer writing: "Just right for an area where there isn't a socket available. Like the height, which allows the light to spread well on the table below."
Several buyers suggest styling them in pairs, especially on windowsills or bedside tables, with one saying: "Bought a pair of these lovely lamps to sit in a window where there are no sockets and they do look great, but I am a little disappointed that they don't last long, just a couple of evenings, then they need charging."
For those looking to add a dash of vintage sophistication to their interiors, the Lexington lamp from Next is the perfect Art Deco-inspired flourish, a style Pinterest predicts will dominate in 2026.
Measuring just 12cm tall, it has a domed, ribbed glass shade mounted on a brushed brass base, casting a subtle, diffused glow that's perfect for creating ambience.
The craftsmanship and finish of this lamp imply a higher quality than its £32 price tag might suggest, while its compact proportions mean it can fit effortlessly into tighter spaces, such as bookcases or display shelving.
Next customers have praised how simple it is to charge and valued the warm, subdued illumination it emits, with one noting: "This light looks amazing! Easy to charge and gives off a soft glow."
It's worth considering that since it's made of glass, this lamp might not be the safest option for households with small children or animals that could accidentally knock it off coffee tables and other surfaces.
The Colby lamp from M&S is a great choice for fans of a more bohemian, natural look, as both its curved base and dome-shaped shade are made from hand-woven, natural rattan.
It normally costs £39.50, but as M&S is currently running a promotion on selected lighting products, it now has 30% off, which brings the price down to £27.65.
The organic material adds a lovely texture to a space without committing to larger rattan furniture pieces, such as armchairs or bed frames. At the same time, being rechargeable, it gives a lot of flexibility as it can be placed virtually anywhere. It comes with a USB-C cable, and the retailer promises up to eight hours of battery life on full brightness.
Bristol Live writer Bethan Shufflebotham thinks this lamp would fit perfectly within a children's playroom or nursery. She said: "Its cordless design enhances its aesthetic appeal and safety, particularly around young ones. Furthermore, it emits a soft glow that provides sufficient light for night-time feeds or soothing without the need for harsh phone torches or bright overhead lights."
One delighted customer left a five-star review, saying: "Really pleased with this little lamp, sits perfectly on my shelf and brings a cosy warmth to a corner without an ugly cable."
Though another buyer observed it was "slightly smaller than I was expecting". The lamp is 27.6cm tall and 18.3cm wide, making it sufficiently compact. It should also be noted that M&S states the lamp is intended only for ambient lighting and not as a main light source.
Another review praised the lamp, saying: "The Lamp is really nice. Rattan is a lovely material. The product is very versatile and can be placed in any room. The light is not meant for reading; it's more atmospheric alongside other lamps. I'm very pleased with my purchase and the price is really reasonable."
For those looking for something a little more unusual, Dusk's £39 Kai lamp is a brilliant option. Combining a concrete base with a spherical opal glass shade and brass detailing for a luxe touch, it has a sculptural look that would fit right into more minimalist interiors.
This lamp doubles as a light source and a statement piece, making it ideal for a corner of the living room or a dining room sideboard. It's dimmable, which is great for adjusting according to your mood, but it's also a great option for the bedroom, as its smooth, curved lines lend a more organic feel to the "cold" materials it's made from.
Customers online praised its impressive battery life and the ability to switch between warm and cool lighting. One reviewer wrote: "Really impressed with the quality, and battery life once charged. Also, like that, you can choose a cool light or warm light, it's perfect for what I wanted."
Another said: "Great quality and looks amazing on our bedside table. Bonus points for being wireless, as we don't have any sockets close to the bed."
A third review said: "Highly recommend this gorgeous little lamp," describing it as "A little beauty with three glow settings and an eye-catching sturdy base."
However, one individual noted they "didn't realise it was rechargeable" but confirmed "it's nice" nonetheless.
Habitat's Kiro lamp is another great option for people looking for something a little more modern, thanks to its unique, angular mushroom shape. Bethan, who owns one of these lamps, said it "has introduced a wonderful atmosphere to my kitchen space with its complementary deep burgundy shade and distinctive silhouette."
The lamp has a matte metal finish, with a conical top and sharp edges that immediately catch the eye, and shoppers can also choose between burgundy, grey and black.
It's touch-activated and can be adjusted across three brightness settings. Although Habitat doesn't specify the battery life, Bethan says it's "impressive", also saying that the LED bulb "emits a gentle, warm light that suits both early mornings and evenings perfectly, with its three brightness levels creating either a snug or functional ambience".
At H27.5xW28cm, it's a great size for bedside tables, worktops and writing desks.
The only drawback Bethan pointed out is that "while its base is quite snug at 8.8cm, the Kiro lamp's 28cm shade is the more difficult element to fit - as a result, it requires quite a bit of room to play with, meaning it might not be best for thinner shelves."
But she added: "However, for those with an appropriate spot, this lamp will undoubtedly deliver substantial style."
