Two supermarket own-brand baked beans have been named the best in the UK, and scored higher than Heinz. Consumer champion Heinz gathered 60 baked-bean enthusiasts to taste-test 12 different cans, pitting Heinz and Branston against supermarkets such as Asda, Lidl, Morrisons and Tesco.

The bargain 40p cans at Aldi and Lidl tied for top spot, with Heinz beans coming just a smidge behind in third place, but costing more than three times as much. The Aldi Bramwells Beans in a Rich Tomato Sauce were described as an "excellent all-rounder" with close to three-quarters of testers finding the texture of the beans and the sauce to be just right.

Nearly two-thirds of the panel said they tasted delicious and most agreed that they were pleasantly sweet. At just 40p a can, they were named a Which?Best Buy and Great Value products are the same as Lidl's Newgate Baked Beans in a Rich Tomato Sauce.

Nearly two-thirds said they liked the sweetness of Lidl's product, and many liked the texture. The panel thought the beans and the sauce complemented each other well.

Heinz Baked Beans came next, but the cans cost more than three times as much as the supermarket versions at £1.40. It came one percentage point behind the supermarket favourites, so it was still named a Best Buy.

The texture of the beans and the sauce were enjoyed by most, while over half said the sweetness levels were right. Their tomatoey flavour was widely approved, though more than a third would have preferred it stronger.

Branston Baked Beans came in fourth, priced at £1. Tasters said the sauce was about the right thickness and the beans had a good level of bite, without being over-hard.

These beans achieved just over half marks for sweetness, with most other tasters wanting them a touch sweeter. A stronger tomatoey flavour would have put them up there with the top scorers.

Asda Baked Beans in a Rich Tomato Sauce came next at 40p a can. They had a decent texture according to the panel, and over half of testers approved of their flavour and sweetness.

Sainsbury's Baked Beans in Tasty Tomato Sauce were "good all-rounders" with a pleasing texture, but a bit on the bland side.

Morrisons Baked Beans in Tomato Sauce came in next. Flavour could be more robust according to the tasters, but otherwise the 45p can was "reasonably good".

Tesco and M&S were less liked in the ranking, while Co-op's beans were the least favourite.
