Supermarket own-brand salt and vinegar crisps have topped the rankings in a recent taste test. Consumer champion Which? asked 72 'crisp enthusiasts' to blind-taste and rate 10 different premium salt and vinegar crisps.

And it was own-label crisps from Asda and Co-op that came out on top, beating off the competition that included products from popular brands like Kettle and Tyrrells. Which? said Asda's Extra Special Sea Salt & Chardonnay Wine Vinegar Hand Cooked Crisps was number one in the blind taste test. The tasty snack received a score of 78% and was named Which?'s Best Buy and Great Value pick.

Which? said: "Tasters loved their perfect crunch, golden colour and sharp vinegar kick. The salt levels were spot on for most people, and the crisps looked and smelled just right.

"They're not the cheapest on test, but still much better value than the big-name brands."

It was listed by Which? in August 2025 as costing £1.34 for 150g or 89p per 100g.

However, it was noted the product is no longer available and after a quick search of Asda's website, it appears this remains the case.

Co-op's Irresistible Hand Cooked Sea Salt & Chardonnay Wine Vinegar Crisps was also named a Best Buy, receiving a score of 75%.

The snack is described as "tangy" and tasters noted its "appetising aroma and appearance".

While Aldi's Specially Selected Sea Salt & Chardonnay Vinegar Hand Cooked Crisps earned a score of 69%.

At £1.09 for 150g, or 73p per 100g, they were the cheapest in the test and a "popular choice" among the experts.

Which? said: "The three brands that market themselves as more premium or artisanal-style snacks ended up with the lowest scores overall - with Pipers crisps rated the least popular by our tasters."

Tyrrells Sea Salt & Cider Vinegar Crisps received a score of 63%, Kettle Sea Salt & Balsamic Vinegar of Modena Potato Chips got 60% and Pipers Burrow Hill Cider Vinegar & Sea Salt Crisps 57%.
