New Delhi: Renault is preparing a new compact SUV that could be called the Bridger when it reaches production. The name was recently used on a concept model, and the company may keep it for the final version as well. The SUV is expected to launch before the end of 2027, with India likely to be the first market where it goes on sale.

After its launch in India, Renault plans to export the SUV to other developing regions, including Africa and the Middle East. The company has also indicated that the model could be offered with different powertrain options, including petrol, hybrid and electric versions. However, the exact availability of these options will depend on the market.

Renault may keep the Bridger name

Renault Bridger back gets an aggressive design element

Renault has suggested that the Bridger name could continue from the concept to the production model. Sylvia dos Santos, who heads the company’s naming strategy, said the name fits into Renault’s global naming approach.

According to her, Bridger follows the same idea as names like the Renault Duster. She described it as a strong and versatile name that fits with the company’s plans to expand its presence in international markets.

Concept hints at a rugged sub-4m SUV

Despite being a compact SUV, Renault Bridger is going to have segment-leading space

The Bridger concept gives an early look at what the upcoming compact SUV could be like. It features a boxy design and a spare wheel mounted on the tailgate, giving it a more rugged appearance. The spare wheel is not included in the vehicle’s overall length, which helps keep the SUV under four metres.

If launched in this size category, the model will compete in the crowded sub-4m SUV segment. Key rivals in this space include the Hyundai Venue, Kia Sonet, Maruti Suzuki Brezza, Mahindra XUV 3XO, Tata Nexon and Skoda Kylaq.

The concept model also shows a boot capacity of 400 litres. This is slightly higher than the 390-litre boot offered by the Kia Syros, which currently has one of the largest luggage spaces in the segment.
