Alan Titchmarsh, 76, is a seasoned gardener and radio and television presenter who has been a familiar face on British screens for many years. Titchmarsh embarked on his radio career as the host of the gardening programme House in a Garden on BBC Radio 2. He subsequently featured on the BBC TV show Nationwide as a horticulture specialist before presenting the Chelsea Flower Show for BBC television in 1983.
In 1996, Titchmarsh took up the mantle as the host of the BBC's Gardeners' World, with the show even being shot in his own garden. He then transitioned to hosting theBBC One TV series Ground Force alongside presenters Charlie Dimmock and Tommy Walsh. Beyond gardening, Titchmarsh has written several fiction books, with his first published by Simon & Schuster in 1998.
Originally from Ilkley, West Riding of Yorkshire, Titchmarsh now splits his time between Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.
He and his wife Alison relocated to a Grade II-listed Georgian Hampshire farmhouse in 2002. The property sprawls across four acres of land, boasting 10 mini waterfalls, a vast greenhouse, a shed and an abundance of lush greenery.
However, in 2025, Alan spoke to Country Life about putting the stunning house in Alton, Hampshire, on the market.
The property is currently listed on Savills for an asking price of £3.5 million. It has five bedrooms, three living rooms and three bathrooms and is described as having been "sympathetically extended and updated over the years to create a modern family home while retaining original features such as oak beams and sash windows."
After meticulously renovating the house and, of course, the extensive gardens, Alan told Country Life that he and his wife are selling up and downsizing to another home in Hampshire.
He said this is to be closer to the couple's daughters and grandchildren - and because he feels he has another garden in him.
Alton in Hampshire, where Alan's former home is, is a market town steeped in history, having been documented in the Domesday Survey of 1086.
The bustling town is reputed to be one of Hampshire's friendliest and was once the residence of famed novelist Jane Austen.
The town, previously recognised by Muddy Stilettos as one of the top places to live in the UK, is also celebrated for its untouched natural beauty, serene countryside, and bustling shops, restaurants, and pubs.
Muddy Stilettos characterised the town as "pretty and commutable", brimming with "chocolate box thatched cottages, barn conversions, Victorian and Edwardian houses and contemporary new builds".
Titchmarsh also owns a seaside property near Cowes on the Isle of Wight, where he spends roughly a third of his time.
In Alton, Hampshire, homes had an average price of £396,219 over the past year, according to Rightmove, with semi-detached properties making up the majority of sales in Alton during the last year, fetching an average price of £414,601.
