Deepinder Goyal, the billionaire CEO and founder of online food delivery service Zomato, married Mexican entrepreneur and fashion model, Grecia Munoz, now known as Gia Goyal, last year. However, before Grecia (now Gia), Deepinder Goyal was married to Kanchan Joshi, his college girlfriend, whom he met while they were studying together at IIT Delhi.
Deepinder Goyal met Kanchan Joshi at IIT Delhi where she was pursuing her MSc. The duo shared lab sessions together at the institute’s Mathematics and Computing department, became friends, and soon fell in love.
Deepinder and Kanchan tied the knot in 2007, a year before he co-founded Zomato with his friend and colleague, Pankaj Chaddah. The couple were happily married for years, but the relationship fell apart, ultimately ending in a divorce.
However, despite ending their marriage, Deepinder and Kanchan have often talked about how they are still friends, and have immense respect for each other.
“I chased her for six months,” Deepinder revealed in an earlier interview with Forbes India. “We understand each other very well. We haven’t fought in years,” he added.
The couple have a daughter together, Sitara, who was born in 2013.
An IIT Delhi alumnus, Kanchan Joshi, now teaches Mathematics at the Delhi University as an Assistant Professor. Kanchan boasts impressive academic accomplishments, with a Bachelors degree in in Mathematics from Delhi University, MSc in Mathematics, and later a PhD in Mathematics, from the prestigious IIT Delhi.
According to Deepinder’s own admission, he was introduced to Grecia by a mutual friend when she was in Delhi. “I was single for the longest time. My friends would set me up on dates and advised me not to settle down,” he revealed on The Great Indian Kapil Sharma Show.
However, the “advice” changed when Deepinder’s friend introduced him to Munoz “He was like, ‘make sure to meet her, and you’ll end up marrying her.” His friends words turned out to be an accurate prediction as Deepinder and Grecia fell in love and ended up getting married.
In early 2024, Gia and Deepinder got married at a private wedding but news of their marriage only surfaced in March after the couple came back from their honeymoon in France. Later, the couple made their first public appearance together at the NDTV Indian of the Year awards.
An Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi alumnus, Deepinder Goyal co-founded Zomato in 2008, and has transformed the company into the country’s major online food-delivery platform, with a market cap of Rs 2.78 lakh crore. Over the years, Zomato has expanded its presence to other countries through strategic acquisitions, such as Cibando in Italy and Gastronauci in Poland.
In 2022, Zomato ventured into the quick-commerce platform space by acquiring Blinkit, previously known as Grofers, to take on its competitors Swiggy’s Instamart, Zepto, among others.
Apart from a successful foray in the the quick-commerce sector, Zomato also operates HyperPure, a B2B platform which sells spices, fruits, vegetables and dairy products to hotels, restaurants and caterers.
According to Forbes, Deepinder Goyal has a net worth of $1.3 billion as of January 26, 2025. The 41-year-old Zomato CEO sits on the second spot on Hurun India top 200 self-made entrepreneurs list, thanks largely to the rapid rise witnessed by his company since July this year.
