Former Chief Election Commissioner Navin Chawla passes away

Former Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) of India, Navin Chawla, has passed away at the age of 79.

His death was confirmed by another former CEC, SY Quraishi.

"He passed away this morning at Apollo Hospital," Quraishi said.

Chawla had been admitted to Apollo Hospital in New Delhi for brain surgery before his demise.

An Election Commission functionary also confirmed the news of Chawla's passing.

Chawla was the Election Commissioner of India from 2005 to 2009.

He then took over as the Chief Election Commissioner in April 2009 and served in the position till July 2010.

Before serving in these positions, Chawla had an illustrious career in the bureaucracy.
